The organic/synthetic fertilizer arguement basically is one of personal choice. With that said I think "organic" is a vastly misunderstood term. From a chemical standpoint it simply means containing the element of life, carbon. Over years its meaning has changed so much that there currently is no definition that is acceptable to everyone.
What should be said is that "organic" is not synonmous with "safe". Milorganite is a popular organic that contains cadmium, a heavy metal that triggers a written label warning to the user not to get it near edible crops.
I believe the arguement is moot since proper application procedures protect the user, consumer, and environment, regardless of product choice.
If you really want to investigate this further you can go to The EPA Environmental Fact Sheet posted in 1997 that relates to Waste-Derived Fertilizers, and the review of the EPA Stakeholders Meeting on Hazardous Waste Derived Fertilizers (Nov. 12-13, 1998). All are available at:

I like what Phil has done with this website. There is much more science in our business than the consumer gives us credit for. This site allows us to share that type of information which is invaluable.
