random snow removal ques..

About a month ago, i charged a customer 60$ to shovel/snowthrow a 40' x 8' driveway, after nearly 2ft of snow, and i thought she was gunna have heart failure when i gave her the bill...What do you think is a reasonable charge for such a service? was I unreasonable to ask for that much? or is she cheap and didn't realize the manual labor involved in moving that much snow?? any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks, guys

seems reasonable to me for that much snow. I assume it was alot longer then a normal ten min 3 inch job.

I would say that was fair, very fair. Why?? Because if I contracted as I do to plow it on a regular basis, I plow every 4''-6'' , $25-$35 a push. That's $100-$140. No, you didn't overcharge.

Remind her how long it would take her with her shovel. Just because you own equipment to do the job faster does not make it cheaper. You have to deal with the cost (original purchase/upkeep) of such equipment and commercial insurance. $60 is fine.

Remember how Fred Sanford always faked a heart attack when he wanted things to go his way. She was just being childish instead of reasonable, something many people do to avoid reality. I agree with all the above.

Just curious, you said "shovel/snowthrow". Did you do all of it with a shovel?


Either way, your price is not outrageous by any stretch.

Would have been 125 for me.....and that's on a 20 X 16.....tell her to go buy a 800 dollar blower, store it, upkeep it...etc.....or just spend 4 hours shoveling it, and probably having a heart attack to boot.

HAHA.. thanks for your thoughts and encouragement. I agree with all your responces, thats why i was sorta shocked when she put up a stink over the bill. i mean the fact i used a snowblower alone should have made the price "ok" in her mind, who knows wut some punk, neighborhood kids would have charged her to do it by hand with no HP behind it.. i'm jsut glad i was on the money with this one.. thanks again guys,

if it was 12" id charge $60 if it was 20" id charge 80-95, upto 30" would be more like $135.

Give the price to the customer up front. Then they can't "act" surprised.

I have customer's like that. I try to tell them the price in advance, and if they don't like it, it is there option to find someone else. Just remember her "sticker shock" when she calls again. Your price was right on.

This is the perfect example why we no longer accept residential snow accounts. We can bill a commercial customer 20K in two weeks and a residential $100.00 and quess who will call and bit@h, the residential. Residentials are not worth the headaches, better off letting them shovel their own.

Totally reasonable, i got paid $50 for a drive way about the same size plus a side walk with my snow blower!! And there was probly no more than 4" if that!!

Not counting the fact you had to do 2 FEET you couldve charged more, but then agin she probly really had a heart attack lol.
