  • Need recommendations for Meyer plow set-up

I just bought a used Meyer ST 7.5' plow for $1000. I've had little experience with Meyer plows in the past. However, I'm no fool...I could tell immediately that this plow was pieced together. It has the old-school style toggle control switches. The plow itself appears to be from the same era as the toggle switches. The previous owner bought the newer style tube frame and mount 2 years ago. The pump is an old E-47. The truck mount is for an 76-87 Chevy/GMC (which isn't my truck...more on that later) As it sits now, everything is in good working order, or so the previous owner told me.

I highly doubt I will run this plow until next winter. In the meantime I hope to repaint the plow, replace decals, replace normal wear parts and might send the pump unit off to be rebuilt. Hopefully the end result is a completely rebuilt plow.

    My questions are:
    1) Which controls should I upgrade to (if any)? I.E. Slik Stik, Touch Pad??
    2) Should I stay with rebuilding the E-47 unit or upgrade to the E-57/E-60??
    3) Anyone need a truck mount for their 76-87 Chevy/GMC? If not I plan to sell it on ebay soon.

What I want is a reliable plow set-up. I don't think the plows current condition would like to handle a full day of plowing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Question 1

I have used the slik stik for many years. Yes it is basic, but it works.

    Question 2

The only reason to upgrade the pump is for speed. Yes the other pumps are faster but do you need it.

First plow I ever had was a 77 chev with a Monarch pump. 2nd was a 86 f250 with a meyer system. While I had that truck I had the blade changed to a plastic blade with a steel frame. At that time the mounting brackets were welded to the frame of the truck. The next one was a 95 f150 fitted with the tubular frame that you mentioned. That unit was then switched to what I have today, a 99 2500 GMC. The only part that I had to change from the f150 to the 2500 was the mounting bracket to fit the frame of the truck.

    Question 3

    Not me

    Dave

l Good luck with the plow set-up. I have two meyers plows, e-57 & e-60 quik-lift. The e-60 lifts faster, you would eventually like it a lot better than the e-47. That said, they are generally fairly easy to repair, having a manual to help diagnose any issues would help immensly. The e-57 has the slik-stik, e-60 has the touchpad. Once you use the touch-pad, you never use the slik-stik again. Only thing I have replaced is a pair of rams, seals were leaking. You can buy them at jthomas.com, $65-$70 apiece.

How much slower is the E-47 compared to the E-60? Wouldn't the power angling time be effected as well with a slower pump? Also, I have heard the E-57 is just a heavier duty version of the E-47...is this true?

The e-60 is faster mainly lifting the plow, although it may be faster angling as well. The e-57 may be a heavier version, although I'm not sure of that.
