  • Salt spreader

Got recommendations for a cheap(er) tailgate salt spreader? I'll need one that can also spread sand (vibrator add-on acceptable?). Unit will receive minimal use for at least one-two years.

I was looking at the CPW catalog and the Buyers they have available. Seems like a good deal, but you'd have to add the vibrator, and I'm not entirely sure the things are made to handle a vibrator???

I bought a used Meyer spreader last year, but I ended up returning it after I realized the vibrator was tearing the chit outta the unit. It would have been a nice buy otherwise.

What capacity are you looking at?

Plastic hopper was cracking due to the vibrator. Previous owner had the plastic welded, but the crack re-appeared in the same spot. That was my clue to ditch it. I don't know how I failed to notice it prior to purchase?

Ya know, I'm not sure. Something small. Like I said, whatever I end up with will only be used minimally for the first couple years. After that I'll probably be looking into a much larger unit anyhow?? Not really sure though...

I need a spreader only b/c I have a couple small lot gigs where I might have to apply salt if needed. But not so much so where I can justify spending several grand on some of the tailgate units I've seen.

how many lots do you have and what size? Use a push spreader if you only have a few. Save the dough.

                      Cheap...

Cheap enough I wouldn't care if it quit working 2 years down the road.

                        Those aren't very good.

You should look into the SnowEx models. I think the smaller unit is called the mini load or something like that. You will want something that is designed for about 5-6 bags at the minimum.

I think Lesco also carries a rebadged Snow Ex unit for a couple hundred less.

For double that price of that Buyers, you could get a much nicer unit that will last many many years.

Yeah, I've since learned this base model isn't good at all. For bout $200-300 more, the base model is offered with an internal auger, heavier duty motor (used in their commercial spreaders), 'proper' battery to unit hard wiring, and a variable speed controller - oh, and a tilt away feature. What these things never are good it, and most tailgate spreaders anyhow, is sand. A vibrator only packs the material together inside the hopper....makes sense. This upgraded unit is considered 'light commercial.'

I still can't justify spending more than a grand on a spreader when I'm likely just gonna use it less than a dozen times/year.

I saw that SnowEx somewhere, for something like $800-900? Picture had it mounted on the back of an SUV.....looked small, but so are these Buyers. I'll look more into it.

                          I've been going to skool.

DOH, know I dunno bout the SnowEx. I heard from a person that runs the same one I'd be buying that they don't like theirs.

Man.......probably need to venture over to a snow forum for this one......
