  • low ballers are back again!

Here come the winter again and the low ballers are at it again. These guys go door to door(residential) and hang an ad on the door or mail box that reads- Snow plowing starts at $20.00* when you sign a 2 season contract with Land*rt today! Call 715 359 @@@@ to sign up!
When you flip it over the fine print says its 20 bucks for 1 month or 5 plowings, after that it goes to the regular price of $45.00 per service and you just signed up for spring, summer and fall maintainence of your lawn also. If you want out of the 2 yr contract its $650.00 in the first yr, in the second you have to pay a $400.00 cancellation fee.
Now thats in about #6 size on Microsoft Word and everyone here at R&L( even my 14 yr old daughter) needed a magnifying glass to read it and we lost 8 good customers to this headache.
Then again, Maybe we should do something like this also, as maybe you just get enough to pay bills the first month but after that your getting $5 more that starting rate of most others here($40) and you'll be able to tell the complainers to go somewhere else 'cause you make the cancellation fee anyhow plus your bound to keep 10% for yr-round work also.
Any one else care to comment on this?

thats a pretty good scam. atleast they are smart enough to charge the right price most of the time. its the guys who are too dumb the realize 20 bucks is not enough that really hurt us.

I see a low introductory price, but not really lowballing.

Additionally I think its called stacking- the fine print of all the other service you just signed up for unawares....

We charge a lot more for snow removal, but we have more windshield time to recover, and our equipment is macking.

If you're gonna be dumb, you better be tough

Sounds like good way to hurt their business.....I'm surprised they've been around since 1938 and stoop to this level.....guess they know what they're doing?

I think this scam is disgusting. How can anyone run a good, successful, ETHICAL business while tricking customers into something they don't really want? We take pride in running our business with values, including honesty. Customers always know up front, in writing, in LARGE print, what they are getting. We also verbally confirm. The only way to be successful is to work hard, be truthful, believe in the quality of your work, and stand behind what you do.

I agree completely! What really gets me is they "Land *rt" were one of the ones we kinda used as an example of setting up R&L (26 yrs ago) and now it just burns me up that I did that. To be fair, I did talk to one of their drivers lately and he said they need all they can get as they have gotten so big and with the recession they would have to close shop if they couldn't find work.
I can only wish for that!

I believe in Michigan, it is illegal to sign for more than one year for lawn care.
