Sorry to say it, but that whole "I don't need a gun" BS is what got you robbed in the first place. WHat if that punk had been a little more nervous, and accidentally put one right through your chest? You would have laid there and (heaven forbid) quite possibly died, and he would have gotten 3-5 years because it was an "accident". Your response may have been a good one for you at the moment, but mine would have been quite a bit different.
Kid: Give me the keys and lay down.
Woody: Replies "Sure thing!" reaches down and puts his hand in his pocket, smiling at the kid. Rather than grab the keys, Woody puts his hand around a Ruger SP-101, aims it at his target while it is still in his pants pocket (it is a .357 magnum revolver designed for just such a task), sidesteps the perp and pulls the trigger twice, putting a Federal 125 grain jacketed hollowpoint or two into the punk.
Just as in a bank robbery, a convenient store holdup, or a gas station robbery, when they tell you to LAY DOWN, there is a GREATER THAN 90% CHANCE THEY ARE GOING TO EXECUTE YOU! If you comply, you usually are PUTTING YOUR HEAD IN A NOOSE!
As someone who has studied self-protection for 20 years, I can tell you that you are lucky to have made it out alive. From the time that punk pointed a pistol at you, you were fully justified in blowing him away. And, in my opinion, you SHOULD have.
Ask yourself how you will feel should you turn on the news, and find out that SAME BASTARD robbed someone else a few days later, but ended up KILLING the next guy. And the guy has a wife and 4 kids at home. How would you feel, knowing that it SHOULD have ended when he pointed the gun at you?
That bastard would have never made it out of that robbery alive. No way I'm letting someone pull that with me. I've only had to pull a firearm on someone twice in my life. In the first case, it stopped someone from running me over with their car. In the second case, it stopped a crackhead from trying to take my vehicle, and possibly my life.
I'm happy to hear you made it out alive and unscathed, but I would have responded differently.

I agree with Woody because 'Act or be acted upon' is proven. I like the idea of a gun thats medium caliber and fits into your pocket. Blow that sucker away...
We are allowed to carry a concealed weapon in Jackson County as of last year. My friend was robbed and pistol whipped three miles from my house last week. There's been other robberies within three miles the last few weeks. Crime is popular this time of year.

Amen Woody! Backsmack, I feel bad for you and I realize saying your going to act a certain way when the time comes and actually doing it doesn't always happen. The more you purpose to do something, the easier it is in the heat of the moment to do it as you planned. Florida issues concealed carry permits, you should take full advantage of that. It doesn't sound like you put yourself in a high risk situation and yet this happened. I would go get, practice with, and carry a nice compact Para-ordnance .45 or one similar to Woody's old avatar. Then purpose to use it next time. Only you could have decided how to react to the situation and you did right because your alive. But it also might have been right to send this guy running at the very least, or send him to an early grave with lead poisining. He would have deserved it for pointing a gun at you. I doubt he was willing to die for some lawn equipment though and probably would have run at the sight of a larger gun in the hands of someone who knew how to use it.

I know the feeling backsmack. When I was 16 I was involved in an armed robbery at the fast food joint I worked at. A guy and girl came in the back door with skeleton masks on. The guy had a sawed-off shotgun. I was the only male working with four women. My girlfriend was the manager counting the money. When they came in I ran to the office and locked the flimsy hollow door. I made her get under the desk.
When he kicked the door in I was ready, thinking I was going to grab the barrel and break it free from his hands. Things didn't exactly go as planned though because he came through the door so fast he knocked me down.
He made all of us lay on the floor while the girl got the money. He kicked me a bunch of times while I was on the floor, but that's all they did. I couldn't have possibly cared any less about the money, but I seriously thought he was going to kill my girlfriend and I. Otherwise I wouldn't have thought about doing anything.
It's easy to say what you'll do until you have a shotgun pointed in your face, and your girlfriend laying next to you crying "don't let them kill us".
When we went to court it turned out the guy was only 15 years old and the girl was his 17 year old sister. She went to state prison for two years, and he went to juvenile hall until his 18th birthday at which time he would be transfered to state pen until his 25th birthday. I felt good about the sentences they received.

I am sorry you got robbed. It is one of the most violated feeling you can have. I hope you have insurance to cover your lost. Forget trying to find the kid it is only counter productive. If you do find him and attack him, Florida Law will be on his side. You will be the Criminal in this case. Miami is a big town and was one time the Murder capital of America. It never fails the amaze me how paranoid people are on the south east Florida coast line. Justifiably so, unfortunately.
Woody
Have you ever shot man? If you have then you know the sleepless nights and the movie picture that runs over and over in your mind. Not a happy feeling to say the least.

thanks guys for the input..it's organized crime allright Im in the police station yesterday for DNA and all that.. a kid next to me got robbed same way same gun same guy..three times his car was stolen (98 honda prelude #4 on most stolen car list) one street from where I got hit. today while purchasing 1600 in tools the shop owner says that the police think they steal here go to Orlando when full up sell off steal there go here and sell. LAst week a chevy impala with chains took a trailer out of a yard draging it down the road got four blocks by the time the owner had gotten there it was in the middle of the street completely stripped. The cops say they have never seen it like this...apparently every fall the bastards go robbing for chrismas time and winter money..wierd...as for shooting a guy its not that i mind it ( I really am not into killing someone..just a few good meat shots would make me happy) I REALLy dont want to go to jail for popping some gangbanger in the thighs..AND because I know how this goes they will get the address and do the retalliatory drive by on my wife and house most likely..which would of course be the signal for total war. Finding this guy would be great it a few ways especially because he made me lie down execution style. those twenty seconds of so of not knowing Id like to discuss with him. Honestly Ive am really conflicted. Ive prayed for him real hard and yet I wish to bestoe violence. I just finnished washing the truck and trailer thoroughly and i know why..I want to wash this out of me.

I hope I didn't offend you by anything I said. You seem to have a good grip on it. Keep talking about it and maybe getting involved in trying to stop this ring will help with dealing with it. My best wishes to you for the speedy replacement of your equipment and feelings of security for you and yours.

Like I said intially Backsmack, I'm GLAD to hear you made it out alive. And I know the conflict you are going through right now. Praying for the guy, AND wanting to beat him to pieces for a few days straight.
Ric: I made "the decision" a long time ago. Many talk about what they would do when in a certain situation, and then find themselves unable to do it when the time comes. Let me assure you I have no problem putting a bullet through another human being if that is what is required. Since only about 25% of people shot (shot 1 time that is) actually die, I rest very easy. Should the target expire, then that decision is God's, and not mine. Should they be paralyzed, that decision is God's, not mine. Should they be able to return fire, that decision is God's, not mine. The decision for me to even shoot is also not my own. That decision was made by the PERPETRATOR! THEY are the one that decided I must shoot them. By their very actions, they have left me no choice at all. I merely direct the bullet downrange towards the target with some degree of precision. My choices are very limited. What caliber bullet I will launch. What platform I will launch it from (pistol, rifle, etc). And, probably the BIGGEST choice, which is that I WILL NOT BE A VICTIM. I WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO BE THERE FOR MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I WILL NOT SIMPLY LAY DOWN AND DIE WITHOUT A FIGHT. I AM GOING TO BE THERE FOR THE GRADUATIONS, THE HOLIDAYS, THE BIRTHDAYS, OR I AM GOING TO DIE IN THE STRUGGLE! And you can bet your sweet ass on that one.
To shoot a man? No problem there. To kill a man? Killing him was never my intention. If he died as a result of HIS actions, how can I feel guilty? Ask yourself what you would do if someone jumped out in front of your truck while you were driving down the street. And what if that guy just robbed someone? Or murdered someone? Notice how HIS actions diminish YOUR feelings of concern?
LawnHopper:
A double-tap (2 quick shots) is the minimum response. I continue shooting, or stop, depending on target reaction. Yes, the SP-101 is a nice "pocket pistol". Chambered in .357 Magnum and loaded with 125 grain hollowpoints, it is a nice carry piece, and fits quite well into my Carhartt pants. The only drawback is the powder burns on your leg from firing it from inside the pocket, but it is a small price to pay. Something like a nice Kimber Tactical 1911 in the truck loaded with 230 grain Remington Golden Sabre's makes for a nice backup, but I prefer my Glock 21 (pre-ban, with 12 round magazines).

I tell ya I usually carry a .40 S&W Glock 27 sub compact loaded with black talons whenever I'm out. I shoot to stop and usually that has the side effect of more lethality.
In the situation I probably would have fired on him myself when he told me to lay down. There is no good way around it, like one of the other posters said, I would rather take my chances.
And if he just straight robbed me, the second that punk turned around or gave me a window to shoot his chest (or back) would look like swiss cheeze.
And if they really wanted to stop the gang bangers, make the penalty $50 plus court costs to kill one.

You may have made "the decision" along time ago to pull the trigger. I am not saying it is always wrong to pull that trigger. Some people don't deserve to live. I would rather be judged by 12 men than carried by 6.
What I am saying is, the mental anguishes of the first time will stay with you the rest of your life. The second will always be remembered and by the 4th it starts to become just another day. In most cases the act of self defense is a re-action and not much time thinking. This is the difference of 1st degree Murder and self defense. Should backsmackwristcrack go looking for this robber and kill him, the Law would call it 1st degree Murder.
