  • Edge Before or After Mowing?

I got into a discussion about this today with another LCO and wondered what you fine people thought.

He- Does it after mowing and then blows all the debris back onto the yard.

I- Edge, blow, and then mow. After mowing I then re-blow as needed along the sidewalk/driveway.

I realize this takes a little more time but I got tired of blowing grass onto the newly mowed lawn...It's like washing your truck before taking it offroading.

    Thoughts?

I cut, edge, trim and blow in that order. or If I'm using a second worker I'll cut while he edges then trims then we both use blowers to clean up.

For us, blowing is always done last. Normally, trimming is done after cutting because it is faster that way. You are only trimming what the mower misses, you aren't trimming more in anticipation of what the mower may miss, you don't need to go back because you didn't trim out far enough, you are trimming a smaller swath because the mower already cut the rest down....which is faster and easier on you and the trimmer.

Even when 2 guys are on site, the mowing guy will outline the property, and the trimmer will start there. Granted some areas are trimmed prior to the mower passing by, but not much.

I always trim first before i mow the lawn. That way all that has been trimmed , when i go to mow the lawn the trimmed grass will get mulched or bagged when mowing the lawn after all that is done I will get out the blower and clean off all the sidewalks etc...

          Mowing, Edging, Trimming, and Blowing

Is the fastest and easiest way. Your approach frankly doesn't make a lot of sense and has to kill your efficiency. If you edge the property every week and mow tightly along the walkways there shouldn't be noticeable buildup blown on the lawn.

Mow, trim, blow.... if you keep up on the lawn the parts that need to be trimmed shouldnt be long enough to leave clippings all over the freshly mowed lawn.If its very long i may trim frist so i can go over the clippings with the mower.

I've always done this with my yard since I am a bit of a perfectionist. Plus a year mowing for the PGA can change a guy's idea of acceptable. LOL

This is what has been happening with my lawns.

My business is only a few weeks old and thinking back I see that these last few weeks have also been rainy and warm for the most part. Add to that the various seeds and things falling out of trees and I've been experiencing a lot of buildup on hard surfaces.

I suppose/hope as the season progresses this will change. As NJNewbie pointed out it does kill my timeline. I'd say it adds 5 minutes easy which adds up quick.

In the Spring the grass always gets a little longer then i would like, especially when it has rained every weekend for 4 weeks now and chemlawn has gotten to them.Once we get more into summer i find i only have to trim about half of what i did in the spring.

If it's an initial clean up where the lawn is long I'll trim first. Other than that it just doesn't make sense to trim, blow, mow, and blow again. You're wasting time and fuel. On weekly accounts I mow, trim and blow....and as I'm driving to my next job I wave to the guy who is wasting his time re-blowing and/or re-trimming areas missed by the mower.

mow, trim , blow....... i had one the other week where it was my first cut and the trimming part was higher than normal so i did go trim , blow , cut and then blow one more time. it was a regular from last season who decided to do his his own and got lazy with the trimming. the price went up too.

                      Trim
                      Mow
                      Edge
                      Blow

Blow last in case I make a mess

Most of my accounts are bi/weekly and as such the grass is taller. Ah no matter I charge more for by/weekly than weekly. Anyyy-way I trim first, I know where my mowers can and can not go. Then I edge, mow and blow it clear. First pass with ever mower I use, I straddle the concrete where I have edged so I don't grind it in, making it hard to clean with the blower. Mow first trim first, edge first, same time either way. We all do things differently, what is faster for some may be slower for other's.

Trim, edge (if necessary), mow, blow. It takes me the same amount of time to trim first or last, and it always looks better when I trim first. I know how close I can get with a mower, so I guess Im just more comfortable doin it first. Plus, I dont have to worry about maybe being tall from rain or whatever and having to clean up a little more, cause it all gets mulched regardless. Ive got a routine and I stick to it. That is what makes you fast. No guesswork, I know EXACTLY what Im doing at every property the minute I step out of the truck. Do it how you want but if you do it the same every time, you will be quicker than a guy who does this first here, then different over there, etc.....
