  • Dedicated Blade Sharpeners

Other than the Magna-Matic, which is about a grand out of my price range, are there any outfits offering a quality dedicated blade sharpener, especially one in the $200 to $400 range? Or should I be expecting nothing more than a glorified bench grinder at this range?

I'm in the same boat on this. It's obvious the Magna Matic is the only true "official" sharpener for us mowing folk, but I to wish there was a less expensive dedicated solution. Everyone sharpens their blades a different way, but it ain't always the optimum.

If you seach some of the posts, a couple of the members have recommended a table mount belt sander with a "metal abrasive belt" Its not as fast but I think the results are almost as good.

Does everyone sharpen there own blades or do so have deals with shops that do it for them?

In the past, I had the shop do it. Cost back then was $5/each blade. With 3 blades that is $15 per time. Once you start doing a lot of lawns, it will become very expensive. And don't forget about the time it takes to drive to the shop, wait your turn, etc. When the price hit $6/each blade at the shop I went to, I decided to do the sharpening myself. After much research, I decided to go with the Magna-Matic. The Magna-Matic is easy to use and productive. If you are doing a lot of mowing, it's the way to go as far as I'm concerned.

I'm looking into getting a magnamatic is it as easy as just pulling the blade past the grinding wheel because that's what it looks like...maintains the correct angle and everything?

The magna-matic spins in the opposite direction of a bench grinder.

                Good luck.

Once you set it up (raise / lower wheel) as necessary to match the angle you want, just run in back and forth along the wheel and check for balance.

                    Blade sharpener

Foley Belsaw offers a sharpener that is reasonable. I do not know how good it is but they have been around a long time. Also have a balancer that goes for $100.00 or so . again I do not know the quality.
