Name in my opinion is not that important....unless you choose a very bad, offensive or just plain unprofessional name. I'm not a vet here like a lotta these folks, its just my experience this rule applies to most businesses. There are always exceptions depending on the market you are after or for example if you want to be a nationwide fast food franchise. Image matters....just don't get over concerned with issue. Concentrate on finding work, check out some of the member posted fliers and advice on everything here...I agree...alot of good stuff here. I'm in the same boat I'm changing my name, I just used petes lawn service to quick make up fliers and find a few jobs. In PA we can check available names online through the state...not sure in al. I'd be looking for work ...networking with bigger lcos, fliers, cheap ads, bulletin boards etc... . Start thinking like some of the vets here. They are concerned with profit margins....cost of insurance , gas, & all the other bills that are there. I also strongly believe in what I have heard here about professionalism, I'm probably still considered a scrub here.. but people here will help when they realize you are serious and want to do it the right way. Check out the AL state website where companies are registered....should be info on names you can use. Keep reading on this site....soo much got info and advice. Anyway....just my opinion....hope it helps a little

I thought for weeks on a name that would be catchy, didn't want to go with Genes lawn service, and begin to look for names in other states that were catchy by using www.superpages.com for ideas from across the Country,it will give you some ideas anyways(can always change them a hair). Good luck!

Don't get too cute with the name. I believe it needs to be "catchy" something that will stick in peoples minds but should not leave any doubt who you are and what you do. You will see that some here have a good looking logo, that is something once you get your business up and running you can incorporate. Just make sure the name you choose isn't already in use, check with the state and get it registered.

        Good Luck

Depends on what you want to focus on. Are you a landscaper, you'd want to put landscaper somewhere in the title, if your not then leave it out. I wanted to focus on lawns so I went with ACRES MOWING.

In my opinion, the name of your business is of significance importance.

Using your first name has its advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side it suggests a personal approach, and a lot of folks prefer to hire a company for which they'll be dealing directly with the owner. The down side is that if you intend to grow your business, Chet's Lawn Service doesn't give the illusion of being a large outfit. Also, should Chet decide to sell his business down the road, it might not be particularly appealing to a guy named Bob.

My advice is to jot down about a half-dozen potential names and then run them by friends and family for input. And like MES said, keep a logo design in mind.
            WEAPONS OF GRASS DESTRUCTION
            Exmark Lazer-Z (52-inch)
            Exmark Metro (36-inch)
            Red Max 8001 blower
            Shindaiwa T231 line trimmer
            Shindaiwa LE231 edger

Grass destruction has a decent point. Also if you incorporate your name into the business there is a larger tax break for having a business in your name, but you may want to check that out with an accountant.

if you are going after commercial accounts, there is a business around here that call themselves "Corporate Lawn and Landscape" I think their name sells them well as they do a bunch of the bigger commcial accounts in Kansas City

My brother is doing a startup out west and he has named it " Natural Beauty Lawn Care" the only thing I could say was. You mowing lawns or selling makeup? So be selective some people have great sucess using thier last name due to it being unique or well know in an area as where to some it might be to common or not portray the image you want. Around here there is atleast 20 guys that are A, AA, AAA, A-1 or something of the sort, nothing memorable about that and if I saw AA lawn care doing a bad job by the time I got to hiring someone I might remember only that it was an "A" company and not hire anyone of the 20 to make sure I dont get the bad ones.

                          Waterboy,
I rethought my initial post to this Q after reading grass desructions post. Maybe try for a professional sounding name that is neutral to residential and commercial customers. By Nuetral I mean you don't sound like you favor one or the other, followed up on your business card with a personal touch to attract residential accnts.....something like family owned and operated. I still think yu don't want to get too consumed with the name thing as there are other important things to work on. Just a thought not sure if U of Alabama has rights to it and maybe a ton of people are already using it.....put crimson tide in your title...ie Crimson Tide Professional Lawn Service

Something else to consider when naming your business - if you expand into other things as add-ons, your name may not come to mind. IE - we are Carolina ProWash. Initially we were pressure washing - anything that didn't run from us. Made perfect sense. Now we have gotten more specialized in certain areas of pwing but have expanded into decorative concrete resurfacing. Who would look at a company with ProWash in the name for decorative concrete installation? So now, with my sob story in mind, look at what your present goals are and what you could potentially do with your company or may want to do later with further education. If you're just going to cut and trim grass, something with lawn service in it would be fine, however, if you plan to expand into landscaping and design, you may want a name that you can grow into. Just my .02

I hope its ok to post my own Q here, someone let me know if I'm supposed to start a new thread...it is on the name topic. OK I'm new here so let the a** ripping begin cuz this may sound dumb...but I want feedback anyway. I'm thinking about using the name "lawnscaping" in my name. Now I know its not a real word...at least I don't think it is. My reasoning is that I saw someone else do something similar in an unrelated field and it intrigued me to the point that I came home and looked up the word. Do you think a name like that could have a similar effect or do you think it will make me look like a jackass or is that a jackass Q? Don't answer that. Thanks in advance for any opinions
