how often to sharpen blades?

I don't care if they're made in Pittsburg they won't last 30 hours in my area. The lift wears out just as fast as the cutting edge. During dry weather blades really wear fast. I don't live (or work) on the coast, I'm close to the Georgia line east of Tallahasse and we don't get rain everyday. Almost every yard has some bahia grass in it and you MUST use hi-lift blades and cut it close to get a good looking cut. This sucks the sand right up into the blade and deck. This is also why I NEVER have to clean under my deck. The underside of the deck looks like a new dime.

i dont get it. i was researching for a while after all you guys were saying you sharpen so often.

i read that it causes the lawns to dry out and go brown as well as creates lawn diseases.

i have about 55 accounts, of those probably 10 really nice lawns. I sharpen about 2x per season. I havent had problems from having dull blades. the lawns still look great after i cut them.

and i dont see how you find the time or money to sharpen so often. it takes a good 15 mins to change the blade in one mower, and they cost about $100 for a new set. You can only sharpen them maybe 5-10 times before you need to replace them. that must get expensive!

before i sharpened them myself my local shop used to charge like $7 a blade to sharpen. that means about $25 after tax+15 mins of your time+$100*1/5=$20 (for the cost of blades) for every time you sharpen them. if you are doing that daily, thats got to get very expensive, around $20 per mower plus a half hour of your time per day, and thats if you sharpen yourself.

maybe ill start sharpening mine once a week or something. but why add on the extra expense and effort if its not going to make me any more money, only cost me money? i doubt customers would notice.

thats crazy! I have a old Encore 42 behind my shed that had over 2500 hours on it when retired. the deck could last another 2500.

i have a 2005 tthp with about 800 hours on it and the deck is in perfect shape.
and a 08 stander rh with 450 hours thats about 6 months old. You think my stander will need a new deck in another 6 months?

depneds on the accounts you cut. our 72's choppers are used on the big open accounts usually bahia,weeds and ant piles. the deck on one has three holes in it after just two year. but our guiys think that you use a mower to control ants by mulching the sand in the mower and do not know how to move a stick or a brick out of the way.
