  • How to calcualte sq. yd.

I need help with the method used to find exactly how much mulch i will need for a job. I plan on spreading a 3"layer in several beds.

There is 27 square feet in a yard, basicly an area that is 3' wide by 36' long 3" deep

I could be wrong but isn't a yard measured cubicly? So isn't it 27 cubic ft to a yard of mulch. Not that it really matters. Everyone knows what you are saying anyway.
If your lawn isn't done when I drive off, your neighbor owes me some money!

Length X Width = your sq ft.

also basically you can use this:
        3 cu bag covers 36 sq ft @ 1"
        2" covers 18 sq ft
        3" covers 12 sq ft
        4" covers 9 sq ft

Length times width. 30' x 30' = 900 sq ft. You can also do it with 10 yards x 10 yards = 100 sq yards.

There are 9 square feet in a square yard. Remember to use all of the same measurement, feet, yards, inches - but all the same.

          Cubic is length x width x height. Figure mulch. 30' x 5' x 2 inches. Change it all to inches calculate cubic inches. (30x12) x (5x12) x 2 = 43,200.

The divide by how many cubic inches in a cubic foot (12x12x12) to get cubic feet. 43,200 / 1728 = 25. Then divide by 27 to get cubic yards from cubic feet. 25 / 27 = .93 cubic yards. You can also just divide by 46,656 to go from cubic inches to cubic yards....

I find it easier to just change the depth to feet instead of everything else to inches.

So for the 30' by 5' area, to get a depth of 2 inches (0.166 ft).

30x5x.166=24.9 cubic feet. Divide by 27 cubic feet in a yard = 0.92 cubic yards.
