I need help with the method used to find exactly how much mulch i will need for a job. I plan on spreading a 3"layer in several beds.

Length X Width = your sq ft.

also basically you can use this:
3 cu bag covers 36 sq ft @ 1"
2" covers 18 sq ft
3" covers 12 sq ft

Length times width. 30' x 30' = 900 sq ft. You can also do it with 10 yards x 10 yards = 100 sq yards.
There are 9 square feet in a square yard. Remember to use all of the same measurement, feet, yards, inches - but all the same.
Cubic is length x width x height. Figure mulch. 30' x 5' x 2 inches. Change it all to inches calculate cubic inches. (30x12) x (5x12) x 2 = 43,200.
The divide by how many cubic inches in a cubic foot (12x12x12) to get cubic feet. 43,200 / 1728 = 25. Then divide by 27 to get cubic yards from cubic feet. 25 / 27 = .93 cubic yards. You can also just divide by 46,656 to go from cubic inches to cubic yards....
