And is the gas edger in the first picture a split shaft Echo? Looks like the one I had a couple of yrs ago.
Yep, that's what it is. I hate it. The only reason it's on the trailer now is because we've been using the hedge trimmer attachment on it. I don't even have any lawn maintenance equipment loaded yet. I just happened to see the attachments for it in the toolbox yesterday and decided to take the pictures. I got the echo a couple of years ago, and hated it from day one. It's always been hard to start, and even with the 33cc engine (I think) it doesn't have enough power to run the edger. We've pretty much switched over to Sthil for trimmers and edgers.

hey rrs. ever use an "edger" to make that edge in your flower beds?
Do you mean one of those tools advertised as a "bed edging" tool? I've seen them, but never tried one. Like I said, I like a flat shovel. I have an old one the the sides are worn out on, that works great for me.

So, what method would you recomend to edge a flagstone walkway, cut into a lawn? I don't want to damage the flagstone with a gas powered edger. I'm assuming I'll need to do it manually.
Yeah, I wouldn't run a powered edger along flagstone either unless it had some type of border around it. (wood, steel, etc) I'd do what Phillip mentioned, and cut it by had the first time. Then keep it maintained with a trimmer. As for the 2"-3" inches. I don't like to keep the edge between any walk or drive too wide because it eventually causes washout problems. One thing that I think is an eyesore on a property is when the hard surfaces look like they have been "overedged". This will happen more when using a trimmer to edge. Just be sure to let the grass grow back up to the edge of the surface before edging it again, don't edge it if the grass hasn't grown much since the previous edging. Does that make any sense to anyone?LOL

i actually meant a gas powered stick or maybe walk behind edger. like the one shown doing the concrete driveway above. i use one all the time for flower beds. reason i ask is cause i didn't see one in the pictures edging flower beds.

Our sand in Florida is easier to edge than the hard pan of other areas of the country. Maybe the stick edger is not powerful enough to the job? When stick edgers were first out they were not popular in hard pan soils.

Yes I though that also before I posted. However I am not a mind reader. If he does know the difference between Upload and Download then he will when he reads this. One of thing I like about Lawnserviceforum, It makes me feel like I should be a member of Mensa.

I heard most people go with their concrete edger then they go after it with a sticker edger.

I have a stationary mclane edger rght now , I then use a stick edger to go after it!

I noticed the socks were a little out of adjustment. But hey, I walked into a mower shop one day with two hats on my head. Did I feel stupid when I saw myself in the mirror. I had grabbed two when I left the house and forgot to seperate them. DOOOOH!

sym-met-ri-cal, adj. 1. characterized by or exhibiting symmetry; well proportioned, as a body or whole; regular in form or arrangement of corresponding parts. (i.e. "the lawn man's socks are not symmetrical mommy")
