  • Need help with excess grass and an old bag

How’s this for hell I am at my biggest account. Its at least ten hours of cutting on a 50 inch Dixie and at least another ten of weedeating, edging, weeding, and clean up. All bahia grass in Florida weather so it grows like crazy. Mower was in the shop all day yesterday so I pushed Monday’s accounts to Thursday cause I hit this account every Tuesday no matter what. I am out there cutting away and the manager comes by watches me for a minute then calls me over. She proceeds to tell me I am leaving too much cut grass on the ground and that I need mulching blades. I tried to explain that the grass is out of control this time of year and this amount of excess though noticeable is normal, not to mention I never let it go more than 7 days. Her response " well you need to be out here cutting 2 times a week now since you don’t do anything in the winter". She walked off, leaving me pissed speechless. Then to top it off mower just up and breaks down on me 45 minutes later looks like tomorrows another day down.
So if anyone has suggestions on how to limit the amount of excess grass left after a cut, or has experienced in any problems mentioned above? I would appreciate your input.
    Thanks

Diary of a 50 plus year old Mad Man!

How’s this for hell I am at my biggest account.
Your self employed in the lawn service business, hell is expected! All you need now is an all female high maintenance family and a ungrateful dog.

All Bahia grass in Florida weather so it grows like crazy.
Many people hate Bahia grass, you will too very soon.

Mower was in the shop all day yesterday so I pushed Monday’s accounts to Thursday cause I hit this account every Tuesday no matter what.
You need at least one more mower or this will continue to happen, when you get it always run the oldest one first until it goes down!

I am out there cutting away and the manager comes by watches me for a minute then calls me over. She proceeds to tell me I am leaving too much cut grass on the ground and that I need mulching blades.
She's evidently hot for you or she's wanting a raise or she's planning on going into the business or all of the above & she will cut grass on the side?

I tried to explain that the grass is out of control this time of year and this amount of excess though noticeable is normal, not to mention I never let it go more than 7 days.
99% of the time trying to explain your actions is a complete waste of time & it gives them more ammo to ruin your day. I dislike customers (people) & do everything at all cost to not interact with them unless I'm trying to get more money out of them. Multiply one 15 minute nonprofitable conversation a day times 5 or 6 days a week, times 52 weeks a year. That's enough for another mower or a crappy funeral when you die thinking about those nonprofitable conversations with customers?

Her response " well you need to be out here cutting 2 times a week now since you don’t do anything in the winter". She walked off, leaving me pissed speechless.
Great sounds like she gave you permission to do extra work for them and She's evidently hot for you or she's wanting a managers raise or she's planning on going into the business or all of the above & she will cut grass on the side? I've never been pissed speechless I'm a mumbling RedNeck, I like to sling stuff, use a lot of hand language & I Mime a lot when I go home that night telling my wife all my problems. Roscoe just sits there laughing his AZZ off at me while I'm doing the Lawn Rant & says you should get a job like I got. He's got free room, board, Beer, Medical & a 401K9 plan that is killer!

One more thing if she's walking off after making you mad & your mowing, you should pull out your customer appreciation Co2 BB Pistol & hit that AZZ one time, you got to be fast & very accurate, slam pistol between your legs & turn that mower very fast riding off in the sunset! Remember that mower probably threw out a rock or something, it's not safe around mowers when they are running? Remember to tell her that?
Here's a link to Help you find the perfect pistol. http://www.airgundepot.com/index.html think Yellow & Black?

Then to top it off mower just up and breaks down on me 45 minutes later looks like tomorrows another day down.
Breakdowns were created by God to give me money to buy beer & take care of my very demanding family & Roscoe. Also re-read the above about the "Multiply one 15 minute nonprofitable conversation a day times 5 or 6 days a week, times 52 weeks a year."

So if anyone has suggestions on how to limit the amount of excess grass left after a cut, or has experienced in any problems mentioned above?
Use mulching blades, blow clippings to the inside thus grinding them up more, avoid contact with people at all cost, get another mower, get a Dog like Roscoe, take home at least a 12 pack on days like this & get some target practice with one of these...
http://store.yahoo.com/airgundepot/eaa-drozd.html I could easily write it off on my taxes & I'm a Redneck sole proprietor. You can T00!

    I would appreciate your input.
    Thanks

Your mower than welcome & remember this ain't crap compared to what's going to happen in the next 30 days, Damn customers & People. I'll send some Cooler weather down there to slow down the growth of one of the most Hated grasses in the World! So you can worry about the New crap coming your way!

    LOL, it could be worse...
You could be an out of work Redneck that's over 50 Years old, with more hair under your arms than your head, less teeth than fingers, that wears a 38" belt & 48" union made overalls, with a wife 2 children (All Girls) & a Ungrateful Dog that are all high maintenance, slowly putting you in a Insane asylum for the Poor...

And the only words you here out of their mouths are...

Dad do you still have that Million Dollar Accidental Death Policy?

Dad can I have $20, wait that's not going to be enough it's Tuesday I need to go to the tanning booth remember I'm on contract & get my weekly pedicure. Can I borrow your charge card?

Dad do you know you look exactly like Phat Bastar on that Austin Powers Movie?

Look Sweetheart (Wife Talking to Me) what I got you at the Grocery Store
Today, 2 cans of your favorite Peanuts, 2-18 packs of the Big Sixteens of Coors Light, 2 lbs of Monterey Jack Cheese, 2 cartons of Menthol Cigarettes & a 1/2 gallon of Vodka... BTW Honey I was thinking since we are debt free & don't have any bills, don't you think you should get that Motorcycle you always wanted & if you do I was thinking about raising your life insurance another $100K & that would make it $300K, plus the accidental Death. You always wanted a Motorcycle. I know where there's a Nice Fast Ducatti at? You deserve it... Yeah PooBear whatever give me a few minutes I'm checking the forum.

Roscoe is the best member of my family, all he wants is Ice Cold Master Cylinders, My Cheese & go outside and if I don't he just goes on the printer or Keyboard...

Please remember ACE it could always be worse...
    You could be me?

This all happened Tuesday (Yesterday) the day after my 50th?

    God will give me Justice!

PS: There will be no Gift Baskets this year for anybody due to what happened to me the day after my 50th! That's a Fact!

        Ace

Cut the grass the first time at your normal height. Raise the deck 1/2 inch and run back over it as quick as you can. You will fine this second cut will get rid of the excess grass.

Most people want their Bahia cut short like Northern turf. U of Florida recommends 3.5 to 4 inch cutting height. Bahia requires sharp blades to cut right.

Stage your excess in centers or rows. Come back around after it dries and dispurse w/ your deck a couple inches higher. Wont have to repeat te entire cut,, ony the small areas you staged.

In the mean time,,,, hows this contract read? Paid per cut?

what about cutting high the frist time around , getting some grass cut and then finalizing when you come back the second time?? or is that like doing the same thing which is the opposite , which is cut low then high for those who work to much and can't think right now

Thanks for the advice everyone. GrassMaster you really helped but things back into perspective . I am checking out the doubles now and when i was in the shop i looked at some 72" mowers. I could have walked out with one well under 9000 but i think i have decided to bust it out for the rest of the season and put my winter money towards a new mower. I did have one question though the mower i looked at today had a 27 hp engine. There is another mower same deck but it has a 32 hp engine. I am sure it is at least a couple grand more. Is 5 hp worth the difference in price since i am dealing with some mean bahia?
