  • Crabgrass Control Results In Hooterville....

thought i would share this with you boys as i sit here drinking a cold beer. on my yards that i did split applications on using Cavalcade with the first apps on march 9 and 10 and the second app on may 15 and 16 using Barricade, no crabgrass at all. i have one yard that the lady only got the march 10 app because she cancelled her program (still mowing though) and her yard has just alittle sprouting up. i also have one yard where the guy waited to get back to me. his apps were done on march 26 and may 16 using Cavalcade and Barricade as well and his yard is starting to show some also, not alot, but enough that i don't like it. now here's where timing really shows as i have three more yards that came on late as well. one, i did an april 9 app using Dimension and a may 16 app using Barricade. the other two got there apps on april 18 using Dimension and their final apps on may 16 using Barricade as well. these three yards are loaded with crabgrass and the customers were warned to expect this because of their procrastinating. as you can see that early march app along with that mid may app does the job as it always has for me since i started this mess. i usually start a week early but this past march we got 12" of snow and 10 degree temps that first week of march followed by 80 degree temps that weekend. remember this is hooterville and this might not work in your region so use soil temps like i do. it does work.........................

Overall results with dimension have been promising, most look very good. A couple on sandy soil have some breakthrough, with the non stop rain, I'm not surprised, though.

Wow, your all over the place on your pre emergent apps.
9 weeks on your first application. 8 weeks on your second.
Dimentions act like a post as well as a pre, while Barricade can have a life of 9 to 12 months.
While I do agree on timing, temps doesn't have a factor on control. It's the plant thats temp regulated.
The thawing you get from the freezing soil after your applcatiion can and does break the weed barrier.
Which in your area must be tough. Not to metion, it might suck having to also wait for the temps to get high enough for your hoses, and pump from freezing.

i was hoping to get more dialogue on this thread. i disagree about the temp thing unless i'm mis-understanding you. i go by soil temps using http://www.greencastonline.com/weather/default.aspx and so far i always hit it just right. as you can see when i was 16 days after the fact on my first apps, i have crabgrass and the further i went, the worst it got. i also used dimension on those late apps hoping that post affect would kill any already germinated crabgrass. wrong.....as i guess the plants were already too mature. this was explained to the homeowner so it ain't no big deal. i just ain't used to seeing my yards with crabgrass. i use granular apps also and i get the same or better results than the guys with the big spray tanks.

I don't care too much for dimention for the simular reason. I do though rotate on my pre emergent every year. Do to the heaver than normal amount of rain fall I have also seem my share of crabgrass. The customers seem not too mine right now. I don't know if the same feeling will hold true in the future, although, it is lening toward fall. Sweet........................Christmas light are coming!

the yards that had crabgrass last season in this OP are free of it at this point with their apps being applied at the correct time this past spring. no Dimension this season, just prodiamine. i figure i'm good to go at this point since the product has surely broken down by now.

Glad to see you gave up on Dimension. IMO, it's over-rated...unless you apply at a high rate. Took you long enough. Now if I can just get you to use liquids over granular.

i only used it on those few yards that were late getting started for it's post effects. i'll take granular over liquid any day for crabgrass control.

                      Crabgrass

I agree with granual over spray applications for crabgrass. Tried Trimec this year with low results.

                        Hmmm....couple things here.

I sure hope you did not apply Trimec expecting it to kill crabgrass. Perhaps you meant Trimec Plus? If so, since you had lousy results perhaps you applied it after the crabgrass was too mature?? Best to read the label.

And even then, we're talking pre-emergents here, not post-emergent control. :alien::alien::alien:

Is there an effective post emergent control for crabgrass?

it's called an effective pre-emergent and doing it right with timing and the right amount when put down in the spring............ you can use DRIVE as a post if you have any issues.
