hooterville is about as far north as they go and then i ain't never seen none here. try anything that has bifenthrin as the AI for the ants and make sure you have the right ant.

I would use both. Use the killer around the mound is and put baits around your house. Below is a good article that explains how to get rid of ants.

u really need a product call extinguish Plus a bait. 1 lb shaker can does 2/3 of an acre and it cost 14.00 a pound in 1 lb shaker cans. it has hydramethylnon and s-methoprene doing large properties it will keep fire ants out for 6 months or more. mfg by wellmark. works wonders here in florida

Drenches and baits works best in my opinion.Liquid drenches are the quickest way to kill fire ant mounds. If a mound is properly drenched with an effective insecticide, all of the ants will be dead within a few hours.

I know this just might sound a little lame but just give it a try and see what you think. Pour some Grits on the mound. Wait 24 hours. Water the mound. The grits are a PURE food source so the drone takes this striaght to the queen. The water makes the grits swell up resulting in the choking of the queen and all the others that ate them. Ive tried this many times and have had a better then 75% success rate.
