          The thread that wouldn't die.

Open your eyes and look around yourself LOCALLY. Something you can go and drive before you buy it. I know someone who purchased a vehicle off of eBay. I'll tell you the same thing I told them.

I would NEVER purchase a vehicle with having the ability to DRIVE IT FIRST. Anyone who does is either someone with money to burn, or a fool. Possibly both.

Get yourself a copy of the local newspaper and start looking through the auto ads. Go out yourself and see, IN PERSON, what you can get for your money.

I'm still wondering why the absolute necessity in buying bigger truck and if that would still apply in my case.

I'm going to be starting my own thing part time while I work a full time job. I need a truck but I'll be pulling a 5x8 with a 500lb walkbehind along with the other smaller stuff. Not planning on doing major landscaping - just good ole mowing. I plan to keep this setup for a few years. I also plan to use the truck as a personal vehicle. With gas prices going higher and higher and the fact I'm not pulling much weight - wouldn't it make good sense to get something smaller - like a ranger or S10. I've heard people on here bash smaller vehicles and some on here think it's OK. The people I've talked to in person at work seem to think a small truck would be perfectly fine.

I'm not one of those that want to buy a bigass truck just to look flashy and have it primarily for show and tell. If there was a lot of weight to be hauled or towed - that's one thing. But for 1/4 to a half ton? Will this really cause a lot of problems with a small used truck?

Is the extra cost in fuel and insurance for the big truck (possibly several hundred a year) justified compared to the extra cost you might see in repairs for a small used truck? ..repairs like a new engine and tranny which would almost make it as good as a new truck anyhow that would last a long time.

Ohhhh SOOOO TRUE.. I test drove a 98 M3 here locally, wanted 20k ... only had 64k miles.. and it was loaded.. vader seats( lightweight) big brakes, wheels, and ... .supercharger.. When i drove it i was like WTF ?? thing was weak bla bla bla.. no power. I called my friend over at Eurospeed.. guess what, the super charger needed to be rebuilt... ton more crap needed to be done.. at his estimate it would take about 12- 15k $$ to get it into good shape!!

long story short... it soon ended up on ebay .. and looked like a dream come true.. I feel bad for the guy who won the bid

i use a small 4cyl s-10 right now, i pull a 6.5x10 single axle trailer.. i normally have a 300lb walk behind, 21" mower, the usual other equipment.. and occasionally a 300lb aerator.. the truck pulls everytihing pretty good, even when i got the truck bed filled with clippings, or whatever else. BUT it doesn't leave much room to expand, i'd have to get a new truck before i bought another mower! and that sucks. atleast get a v6 or v8. i used the s-10 because it was all i had and it was paid for.

My personal truck is an '04 F250 diesel lariat. It is strong enough to tow anything I want, and classy enough to pick up a date in (although I usually use the mustang or spitfire). A neighbor has the gas version and it is not very fuel efficent. For what you want a 250 is overkill, a 150 is perfect, a ranger/sport trac leaves no room to grow.

With the deals that GM is offering on trucks you can get a 2005 Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0 Liter Automatic Transmission for 22,500$ until the end of March I pick mine up on wednesday.

ahlgren, I picked up one of those also.

Seems like a decent truck so far. The 6.0L feels strong.

I would have went with a 6 wheel Isuzu NPR with a open landscapers body myself.

Lorenzo there are several LCO's in my area that have the isuzu or mitsu fuso but I was looking for something that could be an everyday driver as well as a good work truck and you can't beat the price that is usually a 32,000$ Truck. Plus I'm a big supporter of the American Economy I try to make a majority of my purchases from american Companies.

I think that A+ Lawncare needs to go and get a job and work for what he gets. I am only 17 and i bought my first vehicle which is a 1979 Ford F-150. That is the problem with high school students their parents buying everything for them. Get out and get a job i work a second job besides my lawn care company. There times in the summer where i will work from 8 in the morning to 9 in the evening but atleast i can say i work for everything I get. By your parents supposedly rewarding you with a $20,000 vehicle just because you went to school doesn't give you respect for anything. Whos gonna pay the insurance and mainteance you r parents. That is the problem with most high school students there parents do to much for them. I grew up working to get anything that I wanted nothing was just given to me as a reward. The only rewards that I know are the ones that i get from myself. Your are so worried about getting laid you will never be a real business man. If you were smart you would go and buy the cheapest vehicle you can find for your first vehicle and work for a nice second vehicle.
