overfertillizing can cause the grass to have thin cell walls making it easier for fungus or insects to damage it. In the fall overfertillizing will increase the topgrowth wich will use up carbohydrates needed for root growth etc and deplete the stored food needed for dormancy.

in the spring yes, in the fall, if done right, then no. my program in the fall is to make the grass structure strong for the spring and summer. do i get some benefit in the fall for doing it ???? yes. in the spring i don't do any heavy fertilizing. i have a light fertilizer with my pre-em and that's it. we are talking way less than .5 lbs. per 1000. all of my yards do well with some having issues because of over-watering. you still haven't disclosed your location. as far as we know you live in south florida and don't know $ h i t about cool season turf maintenance.

glad to see you put your location up there. now back to business. what do you consider over-fertilizing ? now you do warm season turf and i do cool season turf. i do a maintenance program that is for cool season turf. i basically will put down a total of 2.5 to 3.0 lbs. of nitrogen per 1000 sq/ft + - during the fall in three apps. in the spring my pre-em for two apps is about 1lb total. so i'm hitting about 4lbs. a season. is this too much and if so why ??? and yes my yards are still growing as our temps have just not dropped yet. we have only had one truly good frost. the trees are still full of leaves. i think we have had about 3 nights below freezing so far.

              You said it....finally.

Here nearly every night dips below freezing, it's time for winterizer. Lawns will not grow when subjected to such temperatures. 3-4lbs N/1000SF/year isn't overkill, as that is what is typically recommended for high maintenance fescue lawns.

overfertilizing from a cultural view would be excessive thatch, more than normal disease outbrakes etc. There is also the environmental point of view were excess nitrogen runoff or leaching can be a concern.

the state of virginia reminds me about the runoff and leaching.

Shame on you Steve. You lead us to believe lawns in your area aren't suppose to be growing at this time...and you manipulated them to grow so you could keep on mowin'.
